Mini Reviews: A Conjuring of Light, Love & Gelato, The Hate U Give

Hi guys! So I am trying something new. I haven’t really been motivated to write many reviews lately (aside from eARCs that I receive) so I decided that maybe writing “mini reviews” will get me back in the swing of things. I have been reading some pretty great books and this might be an easy way to still put my thoughts out there while not overwhelming me with lengthy reviews.

So for my first edition of my mini reviews segmentA Conjuring of Light, Love & Gelato, and The Hate U Give

Title: A Conjuring of Light

Author: VE Schwab

Series: Shades of Magic #3

Recommendation: Read the entire series if you haven’t and this immediately!

THIS BOOK. THIS BOOK, GUYS! Blew. Me. Away. It was such a huge book filled with so much action and adventure I cannot believe it was the last in the series. I am still in mourning that this series is actually over. I have fallen in love with these characters and they hold such a special place in my heart. The trilogy could not have ended more perfect.

The first couple parts of the book were so intense and action packed, then it slowed down a bit and I lost momentum to rapid read. However, everything still flowed together so wonderfully and you really just sink yourself into the story.Especially when everyone hops on board a ship! Yay pirate adventures!

My favorite parts were definitely Rhy Alucard. I seriously love these two so much! They are filled with so much angst I can’t deal. Especially the ending? Oh my gods ❤ 😀

Honestly, you have to read this ASAP if you haven’t already. It’s such a great conclusion and I am super happy with everything. Even the one part with one particular thing that made me cry my eyes out 😥 was still perfect.

Basically this was me the entire time reading:

Title: Love & Gelato

Author: Jenna Evans Welch

Recommendation: Read if you want a fast contemporary

I picked this book up on a whim because the cover was so cute. Yes, I couldn’t help it. This was a cover buy and I am not ashamed because it ended up being pretty cute. I expected a bit more adventures, but overall it was entertaining. I had a few issues with it though which I will touch on and the romance wasn’t really what I expected, but I can still appreciate the fluff.

First of all, our main character. Oh my god she was so ridiculous sometime it hurt to be in her head. She was a bit annoying and some of her decisions really bothered me, but she is a teen girl who just lost her mother and now has to live with a man who she just met and is her father. Wouldn’t you be a little hesitant and slow to warm? Yes, I know I would. However, my problems were with how she handled things with Ren! She completely shot him down and said she “never ever ever thought of him like that” and then wonders why the heck he’s upset? But she thought he kind of, maybe was starting to like her? Like seriously girl? Are you that dense? She kept stressing about this for a good few chapters and she was annoying the heck out of me. Thank goodness she got her head screwed on straight! Because that ending? Adorable. I couldn’t be happier!

My favorite part of the book though was Howard. Lina meets Howard after her mother dies and asked her to spend the summer in Italy with Howard and her grandmother reveals that he is actually her father. Howard and Lina had a very rocky start. They weren’t talking and it was so awkward for them to be around each other! I was so sad that Lina wouldn’t let him get close or take the time to get to know him, but everything worked out in the end. Howard was such a cupcake and I want him to adopt me too and feed me gelato 😉

Fast and fun read. Definitely appreciated after ACOL.

Tite: The Hate U Give

Author: Angie Thomas

Recommendation: READ IT IMMEDIATELY

This is the best book I’ve read in 2017 and 2017 has just started. One of the most powerful, thought-provoking, beautiful, heartbreaking story I have read in a long time. Everyone needs to read this book— especially if you’re white.

Seriously, this is a YA take on Black Lives Matter and it is truly a must-read. You can’t just not read it. It’s essential. Within the first 20 pages I was already bawling my eyes out and I couldn’t even count how many more times it made me cry because it was that sad and that powerful.

One complaint I had though was the romance. This book by no means is centered on the romance and it’s just a side plot, but it felt so off. I didn’t feel any chemistry between Chris and Starr at all. Besides the fact that he wore Jordans and was “so fine” I have no idea why Starr even liked him. He was so bland. Everyone else was great though and I really liked Starr’s family and how close they were.

I am not going to say much else about this book because you just need to read it immediately.

Well that it’s so far! What do you think? Should I do more of these? I am really hoping this motivates me to get back into blogging so we’ll see! Until next time, thanks for reading!! ❤

Best book and/or series that you’ve read in 2016

crooked  ACOMAF  tms

I am sure many people are going to be mentioning ACOMAF, but I had to include it because it blew me away. Crooked Kingdom and The Midnight Star were great finales this year and deserve so much recognition.

Best Series:

Definitely The Young Elites by Marie Lu, Shades of Magic by VE Schwab, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo,ILady Midnight by Cassandra Clare, lluminae Files by Amie Kaugman and Jay Kristoff were some of my absolute favorites

Authors that You’ve recently found and would love to read more from:

  • Victora Schwab – Shades of Magic. I really wanted to start reading her Archived series. This Savage Song was another great book tat I read from her this year.
  • Roshani Chokshi – The Star-Touched Queen. Though it wasn’t my favorite book of this year and was a bit disappointing when I found out it was a standalone, Chokshi’s writing captivated me.
  • Tarryn Fisher – F*ck Love. I really enjoyed this book and found it a bit addicting. I need to read more books by her because she seems like an awesome person too.
  • Adam Silvera – More Happy than Not. Oh my god this book was absolutely fantastic. History is All You Left Me is one of my most anticipated of 2017 now. I need more of Adam’s books!

Most anticipated book turned movie/tv show?

I am not really a fan of book adaptations because more likely than not, I am always disappointed. So I like to envision my favorite books in my head just the way I love them.

Although I am interested in seeing what they did with Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon and Ready Player One.

Name a character that you wouldn’t mind sharing a kiss with at midnight (if there is one)

What’s on your TBR for 2017? (Top 5 will suffice if it’s an extremely long list!)

crystalstorm hiaylm  flamemist

these are just a few because I am constantly adding books, but I do want to read more diverse books too in 2017. Also, I know Crystal Storm is out already but my book is on the way, so by the time I can read it it will be 2017 anyway. 😉

How many books do you hope to read in 2017?

I am not too sure yet, but I will say about 60. I don’t want to set a too high goal because I will stress myself out. I read over 100 books this year so I am satisfied. If I don’t read that next year, it’s not the end of the world. 🙂

Will you participate in the Goodreads Reading Challenge or any others (PopSugar, Read the Books You Buy, etc.)

Absolutely. the Goodreads challenge is the only challenge I am faithful to complete. I don’t do too well with readathons or other challenges because I tend to get distracted or want to read whatever I want so I can’t stick to anything but the Goodreads goal. Oops.

Any New Year’s Resolutions? (Bookish, blogging, and otherwise)

Read more diversely. Also, blog more. I definitely didn’t blog much this year and I am ashamed of myself. 😦

Well that’s it! I am not going to tag anyone, but if you would like to do this tag please feel free!
until next time xxoo

November Wrap Up

novwrapp

I can’t believe we are already in December! The year is almost over! But I am so excited for Christmastime. I love seeing all the decorations and lights.

This month I didn’t read as much as I had hoped, but I did read a few really good books.

Okay, I just noticed I included Ever the Hunted in the photo I made and it’s too late to take it out. So I started it in November and finished in December I’ll just leave it there. *psst pretend you got a sneak peak into next month’s wrap up*

  • Gemina by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff | 4 stars
This sequel was so good! It was a wild ride and I definitely recommend you read this. The series so far has been such a surprise. I love the format of the books and it definitely makes the reading experience more enjoyable since it’s different. Plus, I cannot say this enough. Marie Lu’s illustrations are gorgeous!
  • More Happy Than Not | 4 stars
This book! Guys this book was so heartbreaking and wonderful! I can’t believe how much it made me cry! Adam Silvera’s writing is so wonderful and his storytelling abilities really are beautiful. I loved this book so much. 🙂
  • My Lady Jane | 3.5 stars
I wanted to like this book more like everyone else did, but I think the hype ruined it for me. Yes, it was funny. Yes, it was cute. However, the story felt a little slow and silly at times. It was fun though and I enjoyed it.
  • Gilded Cage by Vic James | 1.5 stars
Didn’t really enjoy this book. I was almost forcing myself to finish this towards the middle. The start was promising, but it just missed its mark. I didn’t enjoy the slavery involved. All it did was make me uncomfortable.
  • Paper Princess by Erin Watt | 4 stars
I am in love with this book! So ADDICTING! Can I live with the Royals? Can I have Easton 😉
  • Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill | 3.5 stars
I reviewed this book, so all my thoughts can be found there if you’re interested.

Well that’s it! What was your favorite book this month? Mine was definitely Gemina!

thanks for reading! until next time xxoo ❤

synopsis2

Seventeen year-old Britta Flannery is at ease only in the woods with her dagger and bow. She spends her days tracking criminals alongside her father, the legendary bounty hunter for the King of Malam—that is, until her father is murdered. Now outcast and alone and having no rights to her father’s land or inheritance, she seeks refuge where she feels most safe: the Ever Woods. When Britta is caught poaching by the royal guard, instead of facing the noose she is offered a deal: her freedom in exchange for her father’s killer.

However, it’s not so simple.

The alleged killer is none other than Cohen McKay, her father’s former apprentice. The only friend she’s ever known. The boy she once loved who broke her heart. She must go on a dangerous quest in a world of warring kingdoms, mad kings, and dark magic to find the real killer. But Britta wields more power than she knows. And soon she will learn what has always made her different will make her a daunting and dangerous force.

review

*Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review*

Ever the Hunted tells the story of Britta Flannery whose father was killed and she embarks on a quest to find his murderer, which just so happens to be her longest friend who had left fifteen months ago. Britta journeys across Malam’s borders into Shaerdan tracking her once-friend, Cohen Mackay. In a world of magic, Britta is about to uncover some startling secrets she never knew about herself.

I really enjoyed Ever the Hunted. Though it had its problems and it took me about halfway to really get into the story, it was entertaining. The magic system and world-building wasn’t something we haven’t seen before, but it has potential. The story is easy to get into and quite enjoyable. Though this books ending is a not-so-cliffhanger, it still leaves you wanting more. I cannot believe I have to wait for the sequel now!

What I really liked about this book was how believable and relatable the characters were, especially Britta. She is a normal 17 year old girl who feels like an outcast. She lost her family, her home, and is just trying to survive. She feels remorse, confusions, struggles with what she should do. Plus, she harbors feelings for the guy who is wanted for her father’s murder. Cohen and Britta’s connection is so swoon-worthy! I couldn’t help root for these two because they were best friends first. They knew each other. They had a history. Even though this book doesn’t centralize their romance and instead focuses on other issues, you can appreciate the romance scenes. I couldn’t help giggle every time Cohen showed up. You can’t blame Britta for falling for him.

Though the ending got a little predictable and felt a bit rushed, it was a great book. I enjoyed myself even with the few flaws I found. The book was a little slow at the beginning, but it’s an excellent start to what I assume will be a great series. I cannot wait to read more.

Giving Thanks…to those Book Boyfriends Who Make Us Swoon

thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to my American friends/followers! I hope you all have a wonderful day with your family eating lots of turkey (or whatever). Be thankful for everything in your life ❤

I am thankful for you. For sticking with me since day one. 🙂

Now today and I am going to give thanks to those wonderful book boyfriends who make me swoon ❤

10 Benton James Kessler

November 9 is still one of my favorites and when I think of an amazing book boyfriend, I think of Ben too. He was so sweet and who doesn’t love a guy aspiring to be a novelist? Plus, he’s such an adorable dork.

9. Sevro au Barca

sevroRed Rising | This guy is hilarious! Not only is he the best best friend, but he would be the greatest boyfriend and that’s why I choose him as one of mine 😉 Seriously, I dare you to read the Red Rising trilogy and dare you not to laugh at this goofball.

8. Julian Blackthorn

julianThe Dark Artifices | Jules, ah Jules. He has so much on his plate and just needs some good loving. Of course it would be ideal if it were from Emma, but I wouldn’t mind volunteering for the job 😉

7. Magiano

The Young Elites | Now I was definitely in love with Enzo from the beginning, but once Magiano stepped into our lives I was done for. He is swift, funny, a thief, luxurious, and just downright swoon-worthy. I shipped him and Adelina so hard!

6. Niklas Malikov

Illuminae Files | This is a new addition since I read Gemina. Oh jeez, Nik made me swoon. I love his flirting and his loyalty. Can I have him please?

I am in desperate need of some fanart of this beautiful guy!

5. Khalid Ibn al-rashid

The Wrath and the Dawn | Again, where is the fanart?! I want to see this beautiful soul in picture form! But agh, I continue to want ot reread this book just so I can get another dose of Khalid. He is so broken. He has some great development. Trust me. You’ll swoon too I promise.

4. Dorian Havilliard

dorianhThrone of Glass | How many of you are surprised by this? I am pretty sure you can predict which ones are going to come up next too. But anyway! Dorian is a precious cupcake. Protect him at all costs!!!

He has some great character development too. I love watching him get a grip on his powers and really come into his own. The only thing I am not too fond of is his ridiculous pairing with Manon. I hate this and he deserves more. Not just some random pairing that came out of left field. Blah.

Oh well. I will still swoon ❤

3. William Herondale

willhThe Infernal Devices | Hello William ❤ Oh man oh man. We all swoon over Will, don’t we?

I definitely can’t help but love this beautiful tortured soul.

Plus, black hair, blue eyes? My weakness.

2. James Alexander Malcolm Fraser

I am just going to leave this here….
